Allantoin is a naturally occurring compound first isolated from the comfrey plant (Symphytum officinale) and recognized in cosmetic science for its dual role as both a soothing and skin-renewing active. It has been used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations for over a century, valued for its ability to calm irritated skin, support wound healing, and promote healthy cell turnover. Today, cosmetic-grade allantoin is predominantly manufactured synthetically to guarantee consistent purity, stability, and performance across all formulation types.
Allantoin is a top-tier active for all leave-on skincare formats, delivering measurable soothing and renewing results at just 0.5–1.0%. Dissolve in the water phase at 40–60°C before combining with other ingredients for complete incorporation.
Allantoin conditions the scalp and reduces flakiness and irritation effectively in both rinse-off and leave-on formats. Use at 0.2–0.5% in shampoos and up to 1.0% in leave-on scalp serums and hair masks.
Allantoin can be added to soap formulations, though its active benefits are largely diminished in rinse-off products. Add to the lye solution in cold process or directly to the melted base in melt and pour at 0.5% for a mild skin-feel benefit.
Excellent for post-shave balms, healing ointments, and barrier-repair body butters where soothing and regenerative action is a priority. Pre-dissolve in a small amount of warm water before incorporating into oil-based body care systems.
Allantoin is ideal for baby care products and sensitive-skin deodorant formulations owing to its outstanding anti-irritant profile and excellent safety record. Use at 0.2–0.5% in infant formulations and 0.5–1.0% in adult functional cosmetics.
