Children's Ailments Special Section (For Your Information and Guidance To Keep At Home) A-Z of Children Common Ailments and Aromatherapy Relief A quick A-Z of children common ailments and aromatherapy relief amounts of essential oils listed below are appropriate for children over 5 years old. Remember young children should only have 1% dilution of essential oil to carrier oil. That means 1 drop of oil per 5ml(teaspoon) of carrier oil. This information is for information only and is not a substitute for medical advice and should you have any concerns about your child's health you should always consult a doctor. With all of the below ailments, my number 1 recommended treatment is a large cuddle first!

Allergies

Try calming oils such as Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang. Use in massages, baths, compresses or inhalations depending on the type of allergy

Athlete’s Foot

A foot bath with Tea Tree Oil, Eucalyptus, Patchouli, Lavender and/or Myrrh is effective as all the oils are both sooth and anti-fungal. Add to unscented skin lotion for a foot lotion.

Bites (insect)

Add 1 drop of neat lavender or tea tree to the bite. If the area is swollen, apply a cold lavender compress.

Bumps and Bruises

Add 1 drop of neat lavender to the bruise.

Burns and Scalds (minor)

Cool the affected area by running under cold water for 10 minutes, or immerse in cold water for the same amount of time. Then apply one drop of lavender essential oil to the burn. For larger burns, treat with cold aromatic compresses.

Chilblains

Lemon, Lavender, Chamomile, Cypress Peppermint, are all useful in massage oil, bath or footbath.

Colds

Lavender, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree or Rosemary and Peppermint can be used in a bath or steam inhalation to ease discomfort. A bath using Lavender and Marjoram will help reduce any aches and feverishness. Chest Rub - prepare a blend of 10 drops of Eucalyptus and 10 drops of Spike Lavender essential oil in 30ml of carrier oil and rub on to the chest and upper back.

Cold Sores

Lavender or Tea Tree are effective. Dab 1 drop of Tea Tree oil direct neat before the blisters come out. Alternate this use with 1 drop of Lavender, to soothe, do this no more than twice a day.

Coughs

Steam inhalation using Tea Tree, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Lavender or Frankincense will help. Sandalwood is particularly good for dry coughs.

Dandruff

Rosemary, Cedarwood, Tea Tree or Patchouli oils can be massage into the scalp WITH a carrier oil or added to unscented shampoos.

Diarrhea

Chamomile, Lavender, and /or Peppermint are useful when added to the bath, or massaged over the abdomen in a carrier oil. Eucalyptus is helpful when the is caused by a virus.

Earache

Warm one teaspoon of olive or sweet almond oil and add one drop of lavender essential oil. Using a dropper, put 2 drops of this blend into the ear, hold the head on one side for about 2 minutes. The ENT doctors do not recommend keeping swabs of cotton wool in your ears as this creates a trap for infections.

Eczema

Lavender, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Rose, Melissa or Geranium are good in a bath or massage. You can also add the oils to unscented skin lotion/coconut oil/sweet almond oil and rub it into the skin. A cool compress can also help to soothe irritated patches

Fainting

Put a couple of drops of Peppermint, Lavender or Rosemary essential oils on a tissue to inhale or open a bottle of one of these essential oils and place under the person's nose.

Glandular Fever

Tea Tree Oil is an anti-viral oil, which also strengthens the immune system. Use either in a bath or as a massage

Grazes

Cuts and scrapes are simply a way of life for the little ones! A great blend for minor wounds is an equal mix of Lavender and Tea Tree oil. The lavender is sooth, anti-inflammatory, and has regenerative ketones, while the tea tree is a strong antiseptic used for many generations by native Australians. First, cleanse the area by holding affected part under running water or by using 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of tea tree in a bowl of water and swabbing with cotton wool, and allow to air dry before applying a plaster.

High Fever

Try Chamomile in the bath or in a massage. Steam or dry inhalations of Lavender and / or Eucalyptus for sneezing and a runny nose. Can also be used in a bath

Headaches

Lavender in a carrier oil rubbed into the temples, forehead or back of the neck is good. Add peppermint if you want to stay alert, or inhale Lavender, Peppermint or Eucalyptus oils in a diffuser.

Indigestion

Gentle massage Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary or Clary Sage over the stomach or apply as a hot compress

Influenza

Add Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint or Tea Tree oils to a hot bath at the first sign of illness. Can also be used in a steam inhalation

Insomnia

Lavender is the top tip for this common ailment. Also try Chamomile, Sandalwood and / or Ylang Ylang. Use in a warm bath at bedtime, in a massage, or a vaporizer. Try 2 drops of Lavender on a tissue, tucked under your pillow

Mouth Ulcers

First thorough the juice of 1/4 of lemon fruit in a teaspoon of honey. Then dilute with 30ml warm water until the honey is dissolved. Gargle with a small amount and spit out.

Nausea & Vomiting

Relieve symptoms with Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint, Rose, or Sandalwood. Apply on a warm compress laid over the stomach or gentle massage over the stomach area. It can also be used in a vaporizer.

Nosebleeds

Lie flat and pinch the nostrils at the bridge of the nose. Put 2 drops of lemon and 1 drop of lavender onto a tissue and inhale

Psoriasis

Sedative and anti-depressant oils work best for this condition and can help reduce the stress that exacerbates the condition. Try Lavender or Chamomile and use it in a bath, massage or add to a non-fragranced skin cream or coconut oil.

Sore Throats

First thorough mix the juice of 1/4 of actual lemon (NOT THE OIL) in a teaspoon of honey. Then dilute with 30ml warm water until the honey is dissolved. Gargle with a small amount and spit out or swallow as a warm drink. Also, combine 1 drop of clove oil with 1 drop of tea tree oil and use it in a carrier oil to massage into the external throat and chest area.

Stress

Any of the sedative oils can be used to help this all too common condition and help you to relax. Try Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, or Clary Sage in a bath or massage. For shorter periods of stress, try Rosemary, Geranium or Peppermint.

Tonsillitis

First thorough mix in a teaspoon of honey, the juice of 1/4 of a lemon. Then dilute with 30ml warm water until the honey is dissolved. Gargle with a small amount and spit out or swallow as a soothing drink.

Tummy Ache

Thorough mix 3 drops of peppermint essential oil into 50ml of carrier oil such as sweet almond oil – use a teaspoon of this mixture and using a circular, clockwise motion, massage the tummy area to induce calm, reduce restlessness and ease any stomach-ache

Warts and verruca’s

Apply 1 drop of lemon essential oil onto the pad of a small, round plaster and apply to the wart or verruca. Repeat daily but leave off at night to let the skin breathe. It will take approx a month for the wart to shrivel and go away.
